Hello everyone, We wanted to take a moment to share an important update on what we’ve been working on, what our mission truly is, and where we’re headed next. For the past month and a half, we’ve been actively broadcasting our TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) campaign. As an organization rooted in TNR, we want to reiterate our mission: to reduce unnecessary suffering and build a sustainable, long-term system for cat welfare in Penang. A big part of that is helping to subsidize sterilization costs for rescuers and feeders who are already doing the work on the ground. By "subsidize," we mean we are raising funds internally to fully cover sterilization costs. We’ve partnered with Penang Veterinary Centre to make this possible. Anyone who wants to join us in this mission can do so—there’s no catch. The cost is entirely covered for participants.
In just three months of operations, we’ve learned more than we could have ever imagined about the animal welfare landscape here in Penang. What we’ve seen is both inspiring and deeply troubling. There is beauty in the dedication of some, and heartbreak in the dysfunction of the system as a whole.
This is something that’s long weighed on my mind since we began our mission. Maybe it's idealism. Maybe it's philosophy. But I believe that the pursuit of doing good—of helping others, human or otherwise—is the purest form of living.
We all love a Robin Hood story—the noble outlaw who bends the rules for a greater good. But at some point, we must ask ourselves a difficult question: Does doing good excuse someone from following the law?
Catsoterra was born from a simple dream—one rooted in a deep desire to make animal welfare, especially cat welfare, more transparent, more honest, and more accountable in Penang.
We are thrilled to announce that Cats Of Penang has officially partnered with Penang Veterinary Centre (PVC) to launch our Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) campaign. This marks a major step forward in our journey to build a sustainable, community-powered approach to cat welfare in Penang.
We realized something recently — we’ve never properly explained our organization to our friends overseas. So let’s break it down. We are Catsoterra. The name comes from “Cats of Earth,” with terra being the Latin root for “earth.” It reflects our belief that cat welfare is a global issue and that change can — and must — start anywhere.
