Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve answered some of the most common ones about our work, programs, and how you can get involved.

Do you have a shelter?
No. Cats Of Penang is a TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) organization and does not operate a shelter.
I just saw a sick or injured cat. Can you help?
Unfortunately, we do not have the resources to provide rescue, medical care, boarding, or shelter services. If the cat requires urgent medical attention, we recommend contacting a local veterinary clinic or animal rescue organization.
How can I donate?
We do not currently accept donations. However, you can directly support TNR efforts by becoming a Catsoterra member. 100% of membership dues go directly to our partner clinics to help cover sterilization costs.
I have a cat that I'd like to TNR. Can you help me trap it?
Catsoterra provides subsidy for sterilization only. Volunteers are responsible for trapping, transporting, and caring for cats before and after their appointment.
Do similar programs exist outside of Penang?
At this time, we are not aware of other programs that operate exactly like Catsoterra. We hope our model can be adapted and expanded to help community cats in other regions.
Are the cats featured on your page available for adoption?
No. Most of the cats featured on our page are community cats that are returned to their original location after sterilization.
Can you help me find a home for a cat?
Unfortunately, we are unable to provide rehoming services or assist with finding adopters.
I was recently scratched or bitten by a stray cat. What should I do?
Please seek advice from a qualified medical professional as soon as possible.
At what age can a kitten be sterilized?
We recommend waiting until kittens are fully weaned and eating independently. Requirements may vary by clinic, so please consult your veterinarian for guidance.
Where are you located?
Cats Of Penang is based in Penang, Malaysia. While our TNR program currently operates only in Penang, anyone is welcome to join as a member and follow our work.
Do I need to live in Penang to become a member?
No. Membership is open to anyone who would like to support our mission and gain access to the Catsoterra dashboard.
Can I join if I live outside Malaysia?
Absolutely. We have members and supporters from around the world who are interested in community cat welfare and TNR.
What is TNR?
TNR stands for Trap-Neuter-Return. Community cats are humanely trapped, sterilized, allowed to recover, and then returned to the location where they were originally found. TNR is widely recognized as one of the most effective and humane methods for reducing stray cat populations.
Why do you return cats after sterilization?
Most community cats are not socialized and are unable to adapt to life as indoor pets. Returning cats to their familiar territory after sterilization allows them to continue living in an environment they know while preventing future litters.
Why do I need to pay RM60 if the sterilization is subsidized?
Membership dues help fund the TNR program and are used to cover sterilization costs at our partner clinics. In return, members receive access to the Catsoterra dashboard, impact tracking tools, member resources, and eligibility to participate in our volunteer TNR program.
Do I need prior experience to become a volunteer?
No experience is necessary. Many of our volunteers had never participated in TNR before joining Catsoterra. We provide guidance and resources to help you get started.
How many cats has Cats Of Penang sterilized?
Our homepage includes a live TNR tracker that is updated as new sterilizations are recorded. Visit our website to view our latest statistics and track our impact across Penang in real time.
Why do you focus on sterilization instead of rescue?
The scale of stray cat overpopulation means that rescue alone cannot solve the problem. By preventing future litters through TNR, we can create a long-term reduction in the number of cats living on the streets while improving quality of life for existing community cats.
Is Catsoterra a registered organization?
Yes. Catsoterra Berhad is a registered Company Limited by Guarantee (CLBG) in Malaysia and operates the Cats Of Penang program.
How do I know my membership fee is being used for TNR?
Catsoterra provides transparency through our dashboard, where members can view program statistics, impact data, and the progress of TNR activities across Penang.
Can businesses or organizations partner with Catsoterra?
Yes. We are always interested in discussing potential partnerships that support community cat welfare and responsible population management.
Can I support Catsoterra if I don't trap cats?
Absolutely. Many members join simply to support the mission, follow our progress, and help fund sterilizations through their membership dues.
How much is membership?
RM60 per year.
How long is membership valid?
Membership is valid for one year from the date of registration.
Is membership free for students?
Yes. Students may register for a free membership using a valid student email address.
What does membership include?
Members receive access to the Catsoterra dashboard, including: • Real-time TNR statistics and impact tracking • Our interactive Penang impact map • Access to our Cat-A-Log featuring all of the cats we’ve sterilized • Partner discounts and member resources
I created an account but can't sign in. Can you help?
An activation email is sent immediately after registration. Please check your inbox and spam folder, then click the activation link before attempting to sign in.
What if I want to become a volunteer?
Great! Once you have signed into the dashboard, you'll find a link below your e-card that allows you to upgrade your membership to volunteer status.
Are there any additional costs to become a volunteer?
No. Existing paid members may upgrade to volunteer status at any time during their membership year at no additional cost.
Can students become volunteers?
Student memberships are free for dashboard access and learning about our work. To participate in the volunteer TNR program, students must first upgrade to a standard RM60 membership.
How old do I need to be to volunteer?
Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.
How much does it cost to sterilize a cat through Catsoterra?
Catsoterra covers 100% of the base sterilization cost for volunteers participating in our TNR program.
Are there any additional costs I may be responsible for?
Yes. Community cats can sometimes require additional treatment beyond a routine sterilization. Volunteers may be responsible for additional costs such as treatment for pregnancy, heat cycles, dehydration, infections, injuries, or other medical conditions identified by the veterinarian.
How much are these additional costs?
A complete list of negotiated clinic rates is available on the Catsoterra dashboard under "My Perks."
How do I receive the discounted clinic rates?
Simply present your Catsoterra e-card to the clinic's front desk to verify your membership.
Does a cat need to be vaccinated before sterilization?
We always recommend vaccinating cats whenever possible. However, our partner clinics do not currently require vaccination prior to sterilization.
Can Catsoterra board a cat after surgery?
No. We do not have the capacity to monitor or board cats. Volunteers may contact our partner clinics directly to inquire about boarding availability.
What should I do with the cat after sterilization?
After monitoring the cat during recovery and ensuring it is fit for release, the cat should be returned to the same location where it was originally trapped.
Can Catsoterra trap or transport the cat for me?
No. Volunteers participating in the program are responsible for trapping and transporting cats themselves.
How do I schedule a sterilization appointment?
All appointments are scheduled through the Catsoterra dashboard. The appointment scheduler can be found directly below your e-card.
Is there a limit to the number of cats I can sterilize?
No. There is currently no limit to the number of cats a volunteer may sterilize, subject to clinic availability and program capacity.
Which clinics do you work with?
We currently partner with: • Penang Veterinary Centre (Gelugor) • Windsor Animal Clinic (Simpang Ampat)
Can I sterilize my pet cat through Catsoterra?
Our program is designed primarily for community cats and stray cats. If you have questions about a specific situation, please contact us before making an appointment.
What happens if I cancel an appointment?
We understand that plans can change. However, clinic appointment slots are limited. Repeated cancellations or no-shows may result in temporary restrictions on future bookings.
Do you provide traps, cages, or carriers?
We do not provide traps, cages, or carriers for loan.
